Behind the Scenes: Making the Believe Animated Film
What goes into creating a biblically accurate, ethnically diverse animated film for churches? We share the story behind Believe and the values that guided every creative decision.
Every animated film begins with a question. For Believe, the question was simple and urgent: why does almost every animated biblical film available to churches feature characters that look nothing like the people who actually lived in the ancient Near East?
That question became a conviction. And that conviction became a film.
Where It Started
The idea for Believe grew out of years of ministry experience and a growing awareness that the visual language of biblical storytelling had been shaped — often unconsciously — by centuries of Western artistic tradition rather than by historical or cultural accuracy.
From the very beginning, our creative team was committed to two principles: biblical accuracy and ethnic diversity. These weren't marketing decisions. They were theological ones. The Bible is a story about real people in real places, and representing that reality matters — not just for the sake of accuracy, but because it communicates something profound about the nature of God's story: it belongs to all people, and it began among people who looked very different from the European figures that have dominated Christian art for centuries.
The Research Process
Before a single frame was animated, our team spent months in research. We consulted biblical scholars, historians, and cultural consultants to ensure that the settings, clothing, and cultural details were as accurate as possible given what we know from archaeology and historical records.
We also worked with voice actors and cultural advisors from the relevant ethnic communities to ensure authentic representation — not a surface-level diversity, but a genuine engagement with the cultures and contexts of the biblical world.
This research phase was slower and more demanding than a purely creative process would have been. But it was essential. We wanted Believe to be something that could be shown in any church, in any community, and feel honest.
The Animation Process
Creating a feature-length animated film is a massive undertaking. Our team worked through multiple rounds of character design, storyboarding, and animation review. Every scene was evaluated not just for visual quality but for theological faithfulness.
One of the most challenging aspects was depicting miracles. How do you show the supernatural in a way that is visually compelling without being sensationalized or trivializing the gravity of what the biblical text describes? We spent considerable time on these sequences, seeking to honor both the wonder and the weight of the moments we were portraying.
We also made deliberate choices about tone. Believe is designed for children, but it doesn't condescend to them. Children are capable of engaging with real emotion, real stakes, and real faith. We wanted to make a film that respects that capacity.
What We Learned
The process of making Believe taught us that excellence in ministry media is possible without compromising biblical integrity. In fact, we found that the commitment to accuracy and diversity made the final product more compelling, not less. When the characters look like they belong in the world of the story, the story itself becomes more believable — more real.
We also learned that this kind of work takes a community. The film was shaped by the input of pastors, educators, parents, and children who gave us honest feedback at every stage. We are grateful for every voice that helped make Believe what it is.
An Invitation
We hope that churches who use Believe find that it opens conversations with children and families that go far beyond the screen — conversations about faith, history, identity, and the God who enters into human experience in all its diversity and complexity.
That is, ultimately, what we are trying to do with everything we create at Mustard Seed Media: make content that serves the church's deepest calling, which is to introduce people — young and old — to the living God.
